New Valleywood clubhouse on track for fall 2012 opening

Plans to build a new clubhouse at Valleywood Golf Course moved forward last week with the Apple Valley City Council approving contracts for the first phase of construction.
Preliminary work is expected to be under way by Nov. 1 at the 18-hole, city-run golf course at 4851 McAndrews Road.
That first phase of construction will see crews grading the site and laying the footings and foundation. The second, final phase of work is scheduled to begin in the spring, and will see the structure taking shape with sheet rock and interior work.
The project is planned for completion by fall of 2012, according to Parks and Recreation Director Randy Johnson.
Under plans OK’d by the council in July, the new $2.96 million clubhouse will be about twice the size of the existing 3,500-square-foot facility, and will include a pro shop, kitchen, downstairs cart storage area, and seating for 140 to 150 people.
The decrepit state of the existing clubhouse was what prompted the city to build the new one. Built around 1980 for $85,000, it has been showing structural defects and requiring increasingly expensive maintenance work in recent years.
“While the building has served its purpose over the last 30 years, it has simply reached the end of its useful life,” Valleywood manager Jim Zinck wrote in a memo to the City Council.
The old clubhouse will be demolished once the new one opens to the public, according to Johnson. The existing clubhouse will remain open during construction, as the new clubhouse is being built near, but not on, the site of the old structure.
Additionally, the construction will affect the parking lot configuration at Valleywood but won’t affect play on the course during the golf season.
Both contracts for preliminary construction awarded by the City Council Oct. 13 came in under budget. Urban Companies LLC was awarded a $42,000 contract for earthwork, which is $43,000 less than the city’s initial budget estimate. A concrete contract for $64,000 – $6,000 less than initial estimates – went to Thompson Construction of Princeton Inc.
