A man accused of using counterfeit currency to pay his cab fare ended up receiving a free ride to the Dakota County Jail courtesy of Lakeville police.

Lakeville officers responded to the report of a taxi passenger using fake cash at about 11:55 p.m. Dec. 15 and spoke with the suspect, 37-year-old Billy L. Croon of Faribault.

Police say they found a small amount of marijuana, three Xanax pills and five hypodermic needles in Croon’s glasses case after he was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Croon was charged with one felony count of controlled-substance possession in connection with the Xanax pills.

Croon remained in the Dakota County Jail as of Monday afternoon. His next court appearance is Jan. 8.

If convicted of the drug charge, he faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
