Fourth-grader Cole Kalaus and fifth-grader Lily Raichert (pictured) were all smiles as they prepared to film a newscast recently at Highland Elementary in Apple Valley.

With assistance from staff tech support clerk Sue Rush, the 12 students in the school’s Student Forum produce a daily newscast which includes the weather, lunch menu and birthdays, along with upcoming events and a daily feature such as a new word for the week or an event from history.

Once the segment is recorded and edited, it’s uploaded to the district podcast server and viewed by each Highland classroom the following morning.

A grant from the Eastview Community Foundation last fall helped the school purchase newscast equipment including a camcorder and an iPad, which the students use as a teleprompter.
