Girls basketball team will take on Bloomington Kennedy at 8 p.m. Thursday
Sophomore guard Madison Guebert made sure the Eastview girls basketball team defeated Rochester Mayo in the Class 4A state quarterfinal game on Wednesday evening at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
Guebert scored half the team’s points with 27 in a 54-40 victory against Rochester Mayo.
The win puts Eastview back in the Class 4A semifinal game at 8 p.m. on Thursday night at the Target Center.
The opponent is Bloomington Kennedy, one of the few teams to defeat Eastview this season. The girls split the regular-season series with Eastview winning the latest meeting 66-46 on Feb. 15.
Turnovers were the most telling stat in the victory against Mayo. The Lightning were aggressive on defense forcing 27 Mayo turnovers and turning them into 26 points.
The aggressive start led to a 32-14 lead at halftime.
Eastview’s Hana Metoxen added 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Tyra Johnson had four blocks, four rebounds and three steals.
The Lightning left a few points on the court, though, shooting 35 percent from field goal range and 26 percent from beyond the three-point arc. Eastview was also out-rebounded 31-29.
Mayo’s zone defense also gave South Suburban Conference rival Lakeville North fits in the Section 1-4A final on March 8 holding the Panthers to 20 percent shooting in the second half.
