Criminal vehicular homicide charge possible after fatal crash

A 29-year-old Burnsville man was killed at about 8 p.m. Thursday, June 28, when the motorcycle he was driving was struck by a Ford Taurus whose driver is being held in Dakota County Jail facing a criminal vehicular homicide charge and three other charges, according to a release from the Apple Valley Police Department.

Leah Marie Colwell, 44, of Apple Valley is also expected to be charged with driving while impaired, driving after cancellation of her license and for having an open bottle of alcohol in her vehicle.

The driver of the motorcycle died at the scene. His name will be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office after his next of kin has been notified.

The motorcycle was travelling westbound on 160th Street in the right lane when a Ford Taurus travelling eastbound on 160th Street and was making a left turn onto northbound Harwell Avenue when it crossed in front of the motorcycle, according to police.

Officers determined Colwell had been drinking and tested her for impairment. After the investigation at the scene and testing for impairment were completed, the driver was taken to the Dakota County Jail.

The Minnesota State Patrol is completing a reconstruction of the crash. The investigation remains active.
