North, South both fall; offenses sputter
It was a forgettable week for football teams from Lakeville as North and South both lost their games last Friday where neither scored a touchdown.
Lakeville North fell out of first place in the South Suburban Conference after losing 20-6 at Prior Lake. Lakeville South struggled with its passing game in a 14-3 loss at Burnsville.
North (4-1) still can win the conference championship by winning its remaining regular-season games. The Panthers play host to Burnsville on Friday, Oct. 4, and go to Eagan on Oct. 11 before the regular-season finale at Rosemount on Oct. 16. Rosemount, 3-0 in conference play, replaced North in first place in the league after beating Eagan 41-14 last week.
Prior Lake broke a 6-6 halftime tie against Lakeville North with two second-half touchdowns. The Panthers were held to 124 yards but kept pace with the Lakers with two first-half field goals.
Jamiah Newell led North in rushing with 48 yards on 13 carries, but that was about 80 yards below his average from the first four games. The senior remains on pace for his second consecutive 1,000-yard season with 693 yards through five games.
Drew Stewart completed four of 20 passes for 58 yards. Bronson Bruneau had two catches for 27 yards while Tanner Jacobus caught one pass for 29 yards.
Lakeville South (3-2 overall, 2-2 South Suburban) never led against Burnsville, and the Cougars’ passing game couldn’t get them back in it. South quarterbacks Brenon Larson-Gulsvig and Mitch Wolkow combined to go 6-for-24 for 61 yards.
South had 174 offensive yards. Senior running back Mark Ruhl gained 51 yards in nine carries and had four receptions for 40 yards.
A.J. Westrude made 10 tackles to lead the South defense.
Lakeville South faces a difficult assignment this week as it tries to get back on track. The Cougars play at conference leader Rosemount at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4.
