AVHS player could be part of package deal
Apple Valley High School boys basketball player Tyus Jones will put an end to years of speculation by announcing his college decision and National Letter of Intent signing at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at the high school.
The announcement will take place in the AVHS gymnasium. The public is invited to attend; doors will open to students and the public at 2:30.
Jahlil Okafor of Whitney Young High School in Chicago is expected to announce his choice at the same time Friday. That’s significant because Jones and Okafor have pledged to attend the same college. The two are longtime friends through AAU basketball and overseas trips with USA Basketball teams.
Duke and Kansas appear to be the frontrunners, with Baylor also a possibility. Those three schools are on Jones’ and Okafor’s lists of finalists. Minnesota also is one of Jones’ finalists, but going there might require him to break the pledge to attend the same school as Okafor, who is not believed to be considering Minnesota.
Jones, a 6-foot-2 point guard who is entering his fifth varsity season, helped lead Apple Valley to the 2013 state Class 4A championship. He is ranked by ESPN as the No. 4 player in the class of 2014 and is the top-ranked point guard. Okafor, a 6-11 center, is the top-ranked player nationally.
Jones and Okafor could be opponents next month. Whitney Young High School is tentatively scheduled to play at Apple Valley on Dec. 12. The game, if it happens, would be televised by ESPN.
