Lightning girls face more tough track competition

SSC is one of state’s best leagues

Eastview had a highly respectable performance in the 2013 state Class AA girls track and field meet, finishing ninth – and looking up at three South Suburban teams ahead of the Lightning in the standings.

Such is life in the South Suburban, which probably is the state’s most competitive conference in girls track. Six teams from the SSC finished in the top 11 at state last year.

It’ll take some work for the Lightning to hold its position or even move up, but coach Jorjean Fischer said she believes the potential is there.

“We return a strong group of jumpers, distance runners and our top two throwers from last year,” Fischer said. “Our sprints crew is young and showing great promise.”

The Lightning returns senior Cecelia Rivera, junior Hana Metoxen and sophomore Laura Bestul from a 4×800-meter relay that finished fifth at state last year. Bestul also competed in the state cross country meet last fall as did another Lightning distance runner, sophomore Margie Freed.

Sophomore Natalie Manders also is back after finishing fourth in the discus at the 2013 state meet. She already has broken the school shot put record twice this season.

Eastview’s captains are Rivera, Haley Schoenecker, Megan Boehm, Jena Moody and Hanah Coleman. Boehm was second in the South Suburban Conference in the long jump last season. Schoenecker also is a jumper, and sophomore Kelly Smith does jumps and hurdles. Junior Michelle Ji is the Lightning’s top returning pole vaulter.

The Lightning was scheduled to compete in a South Suburban Conference quadrangular Tuesday at Rosemount High School and will go to Eagan for the Wildcat Invitational on April 22.

Eastview boys

Most of the 22 points Eastview scored at last year’s Class AA boys meet walked out the door, diplomas in hand.

But one of the Lightning’s returnees is senior Jahkye McClarron, who was eighth in the 100-meter dash at state. His sprinting also helped Eastview edge Apple Valley by one point for the Section 3AA team championship.

Other Lightning returnees include senior Joseph Grimm, who finished third in the high jump and reached the finals in the 400 dash at last year’s South Suburban meet, and junior sprinter Leron Norton.

Eastview will compete in the South Suburban Conference Relays on April 29 at Prior Lake High School.
