Refinery seeks members for advisory council

The Community Advisory Council to Flint Hills Resources’ Pine Bend Refinery is seeking new members to fill positions of current members whose terms expire in May.

All applicants must reside in one of the following cities or townships: Apple Valley, Coates, Eagan, Empire Township, Hastings, Inver Grove Heights, Nininger Township, Rosemount, or Vermillion Township.

To maintain geographic balance on the council, applicants who are residents of Inver Grove Heights, Rosemount, Coates, and Vermillion, Empire and Nininger townships will be given first preference in the selection process.

The council, in operation since December 1998, provides community members an opportunity to discuss issues and make recommendations to Flint Hills Resources regarding environmental, safety, and other issues of concern to the citizens living within close proximity of the refinery. Council members serve in a voluntary capacity to advise and make recommendations to Flint Hills Resources.

Council members are selected by a process originally designed by the Minnesota Chapter of the League of Women Voters, and currently implemented by an independent consultant in conjunction with the council’s Membership Selection Committee.

The council consists of 20 community members, two voting members and one non-voting member from Flint Hills Resources. The School of Environmental Studies located in Apple Valley will be invited to annually appoint a high school student representative to the Advisory Council.

Current council initiatives revolve around areas including environment, safety, membership and operations, and community outreach. Additional activities and council meeting topics are addressed as identified by the council and/or Flint Hills Resources.

Council members are selected to represent the diversity of the communities served. Balance is sought in regard to age, gender, income, educational background, occupation, expertise, and interests in serving on the council. The largest geographic representation comes from neighbors living within approximately two miles of the refinery.

Monthly meetings are held September through May, with an orientation meeting in August, and are led by a professional facilitator. Child-care costs are reimbursed for expenses incurred while attending council meetings.

Applicants must complete an application and return it postmarked no later than April 7 to: Community Advisory Council, P.O. Box 110, Rosemount, MN 55068-0110.

Members selected for service on the Advisory Council will be notified no later than May 15 and will begin serving on the council in September. To apply online or to download an application, go to the council’s website: www.flinthillscac.org. To receive an application by mail, call 651-429-8391.
