Last day will be April 14
The Applebee’s Bar and Grill in Rosemount has announced it’s permanently closing April 14.
The restaurant has operated off Highway 42 at 15015 Cimarron Ave. for the last 12 years.
In a message on Facebook, the Rosemount Applebee’s posted: “We have been very grateful for all of your patronage for the 12 years we have been a part of the Rosemount community. Come join us this week and help us go out with a bang!”
The close was reportedly due to an increase in rent.
“The city is disappointed that Applebee’s was unable to reach an agreement with its landlord to remain open,” said Logan Martin, Rosemount city administrator, in a statement. “We look forward to working with other potential tenants for this choice location on County Road 42. And we continue to work toward adding more dining options to the restaurants that have opened in Rosemount in the past 10 years.”
There are about 2,000 franchises nationwide as of 2015, according to Applebee’s corporate website.
In 2016, 46 Applebee’s locations closed.
According to a news release last month by DineEquity Inc., the parent company of Applebee’s and IHOP restaurants, Applebee’s domestic systemwide comparable same-restaurant sales declined 7.2 percent for the fourth quarter of 2016 and 5 percent for the fiscal 2016.
The company expected sales to continue to decline between 4 and 8 percent in 2017.
According to Business Insider, the restaurant chain plans to close between 40 and 60 locations in 2017 and open between 20 and 30 new restaurants, the majority of which are expected to be international locations.
Applebee’s was one of the first chain sit-down restaurants in Rosemount when it opened.
Since 2005, restaurants such as Rudy’s Redeye Grill, Fireside Bar and Restaurant, Giuseppe’s Pasta Alforno and a slew of other fast-casual options, such as Chipotle Mexican Grill, have opened.
Applebee’s also has locations in Apple Valley, Inver Grove Heights and Eagan, where gift cards are accepted.
