Dollar Tree shooter pleads guilty to murder

The suspect in last November’s shooting at the Dollar Tree store in Burnsville, which killed one man and paralyzed another, pleaded guilty Tuesday.

Grant David Hendrickson, 28, of South St. Paul, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with intent to kill and attempted second-degree murder with intent to kill, Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom said.

Authorities said Hendrickson went to the store at 14101 Aldrich Ave. to confront an employee. He shot a 27-year-old man believed to be an acquaintance of the employee twice, leaving him paralyzed below the waist.

One bullet intended for the victim traveled through an aisle shelf and struck and killed a 69-year-old shopper, Donald J. Hortsch, of Rosemount, Backstrom said.

“We are pleased to have brought this man to justice for this violent and senseless crime,” Backstrom said in a news release.

Hendrickson remains in custody without bail pending his sentencing, scheduled for June 19.
